Smash Burger Calculator

How much beef do you need for smash burgers? Enter how many people you're feeding and how you like your stack, and we'll work out the ground beef, buns and cheese.

Most smash burgers use 2 to 4 oz balls of 80/20 ground beef per patty, smashed thin on a very hot pan.

0lb of 80/20 ground beef
0beef balls to portion
0buns
0slices of American cheese

How to cook them

  1. Portion the beef into 0 loose balls of 3 oz and keep them cold until the pan is ready.
  2. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over high heat until it just starts to smoke.
  3. Add a ball, cover with parchment and press hard to about ¼ inch within the first 30 seconds. Smash once; don't press again.
  4. Season with salt and pepper and leave it alone until the edges are deeply browned.
  5. Scrape under the crust with a stiff spatula, flip, add cheese and stack. Cook until done: the USDA recommends 160°F for ground beef.
