Our Review
You can't judge a burger's doneness by color. The USDA recommends cooking ground beef to 160°F (71°C) and poultry to 165°F (74°C), and an instant-read thermometer is the only reliable way to check. The TempPro TempSwift (the brand was previously called ThermoPro) is an affordable, easy pick: its display rotates automatically so you can read it from any angle, and it wakes up when you pick it up.
How to use it on burgers
- Insert the probe from the side into the thickest part of the patty.
- Pull thick burgers off at 160°F; they'll stay juicy if you rest them for 2 minutes.
- Use it for fry oil too, and for turkey and chicken burgers.
Every recipe on PlanetBurger lists a target temperature. See our burger temperature guide for more.
