How to eat burgers in Albuquerque

In Albuquerque, the question isn't whether to get green chile on your burger. It's where. The green chile cheeseburger is the city's signature, and you'll find it at diners, drugstore lunch counters, family-run burger stands, food halls and even an all-vegan spot. Many of the best versions line Central Avenue, the city's stretch of historic Route 66, so you can plan an easy burger crawl from Old Town to Nob Hill.

A few areas are worth knowing. Old Town and Downtown mix historic lunch counters with a modern food hall. The University area and Nob Hill have retro diners and newer spots along Central. West Central and East Central are home to longtime neighborhood favorites. Every spot below appears on the cards above, and our restaurant directory has more.

Route 66 classics

66 Diner near the University has been a neon-lit Route 66 diner since 1987, with a jukebox, a soda fountain and a green chile cheeseburger you can follow with green chile apple pie. Duran Central Pharmacy on Central near Old Town began as a pharmacy in 1942 and moved to Route 66 in 1975. Its lunch counter is known for New Mexican dishes and green chile cheeseburgers. Family-run and casual

Bob's Burgers on West Central has been family-owned since 1963 and is known for its Ranchero Supreme burger. Owl Café on Eubank, about a mile north of Route 66, sits in an owl-shaped building and serves green chile cheeseburgers, fries and milkshakes. It's a spinoff of the original Owl Bar and came under new local ownership in 2024.

Modern and food hall

Stackers Burger Co. in the 505 Central Food Hall downtown stacks double patties with melted cheese and spicy green chile, and it won the 2022 Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown. See our best smash burgers page for more modern doubles.

Vegan

Lucky Goose in Nob Hill is an all-vegan eatery that makes a beef-free green chile cheeseburger, plus plant-based hot dogs.

Worth the drive

The Original Owl Bar & Café in San Antonio, New Mexico, about 90 miles south of Albuquerque, may have been the first to put green chile and cheese together on a hamburger. It's a natural stop on a drive south along I-25, and a good way to taste the dish close to where its story begins.

If you only have time for one stop, pick by mood: 66 Diner for retro atmosphere, Duran Central Pharmacy for a New Mexican lunch, or Stackers for a modern double.

Local burger traditions

The green chile cheeseburger is New Mexico's burger. Roasted green chile, usually from the Hatch area and the Rio Grande valley, is chopped and piled on a cheeseburger, adding smoky heat that ranges from mild to very hot. Some spots use whole roasted strips, others a chopped relish. The state even promotes a Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail, and the dish shows up at events such as cook-offs at the New Mexico State Fair. Read the full story in our green chile cheeseburger guide, and see our statewide picks in the best burgers in New Mexico.
