The Best Burgers in Kansas: Cozy Inn to NuWay (2026)

The best burgers in Kansas are small, old and full of character. Start with the onion-smothered sliders at the Cozy Inn in Salina, open since 1922, and the crumbly burgers at NuWay in Wichita. Then add Buster's Burger Joint in Wichita, Chuckburger in Topeka, Bob's Grill in Pittsburg and Blazers in Gardner, near Kansas City.

Below is our roundup, grouped by region. Every spot appeared in a 2025 or 2026 roundup or state tourism guide when we wrote this. Small-town spots keep short hours, so check before you drive.

Kansas burger styles

Kansas has two burger styles you won't find in many other places:

  • Onion sliders: tiny, thin patties grilled with a heap of chopped onions and served on small rolls. The Cozy Inn is the classic example. It's a close relative of the Oklahoma fried onion burger, which we cover in our Oklahoma fried onion burger guide.
  • Crumbly burgers: loose, cooked ground beef piled onto a bun instead of formed into a patty. NuWay in Wichita has served them since 1930.

Kansas is also cattle country, and the state tourism office highlights local beef as a big part of why its burgers taste so good.

Salina: the Cozy Inn

  • Cozy Inn: opened downtown in 1922 and is still a famously small counter. The small patties are grilled with chopped onions on custom rolls, and the onion smell is famous for drifting down the block. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2022, the Kansas Sampler Foundation lists it among the Eight Wonders of Kansas Cuisine, and Islands picked it as Kansas's burger spot worth visiting in 2026. Order a sack, not a single.

Wichita

Wichita has the most burger variety in the state, from 1930s classics to newer smash burger spots.

  • NuWay: the home of the Wichita crumbly burger since 1930, with locations on West Douglas and West Central. Expect loose, seasoned beef on a soft bun.
  • Buster's Burger Joint: known for big double and triple stacks. It nearly closed in 2021 but reopened with community support, and Chowhound named it Kansas's best hole-in-the-wall burger in 2025.
  • Fizz Burgers & Bottles: its House Burger is made from freshly ground chuck, and there are blue cheese, spicy and Boursin versions too.

Wichita's tourism office keeps a much longer list of local burger spots, from bar burgers to brewery smash burgers, so treat these three as a starting point and branch out from there.

Topeka

  • Chuckburger: an East Topeka spot that has been serving since 1955. Burgers are cooked to order, with shakes, malts and sweet potato fries on the side.

Southeast Kansas: Pittsburg

  • Bob's Grill: a Pittsburg diner whose Triple Cheeseburger was The Takeout's pick for Kansas's standout burger in 2025.

Kansas City area

  • Blazers Restaurant: a Gardner restaurant, on the southwest edge of the Kansas City metro, that opened in 1976. It serves old-fashioned hamburgers along with ice cream and barbecue.

Most of Kansas City's best-known burger spots sit on the Missouri side of State Line Road, but they're an easy drive from Overland Park, Olathe and Kansas City, Kansas. See our Kansas City burger guide for the full metro list, including steakburgers and smash burgers.

Small-town Kansas

  • Jiffy Burger: a 1950s-themed walk-up window in Smith Center, open since 1984 and known for its cheese balls and soft-serve.
  • Burger Station: a carry-out-only burger joint in a small red barn in downtown Winfield, serving classic burgers and fries.

The state tourism office keeps a longer list on TravelKS.

How to make a crumbly burger at home

If you can't get to Wichita, you can make a loose-meat burger in one skillet.

  1. Brown the beef. Cook ground beef in a skillet, breaking it into small crumbles as it browns.
  2. Season it. Add salt, pepper and finely minced onion, plus a splash of water or broth so the meat stays moist.
  3. Simmer briefly. Let it cook until the liquid is mostly gone and the meat is tender.
  4. Pile it on. Spoon it onto a soft, steamed bun and top with mustard, pickles and onion.
  5. Eat it fast. Crumbly burgers are messy, so have napkins ready and eat them hot.

How to plan a Kansas burger road trip

  1. Drive I-135. Salina and Wichita are about 90 minutes apart, so the Cozy Inn and NuWay fit in one day.
  2. Add I-70 stops. Topeka and the Kansas City area are easy additions heading east.
  3. Check hours. Small-town walk-ups often close early or for the season.
  4. Plan to take some to go. The Cozy Inn is tiny, and sliders travel well.
