The best burgers in Iowa are in small-town bars and grills, not big-city burger chains. Start with the state's two most recent contest winners, Dixie's Biergarten in Decorah and Halftime Bar & Grill in Pleasantville. Then add smash burger favorites like Flight Bar & Grille and Smash & Grab Burger Co., and finish with a loose meat sandwich at Taylor's Maid-Rite in Marshalltown.
Below is our roundup, grouped by region. Each spot showed up in recent contest results or in 2025-2026 coverage from local media or national food sites. Hours change, especially in small towns, so check before you drive.
Why Iowa takes burgers seriously
Iowa is cattle country, and the Iowa Beef Industry Council has run an Iowa's Best Burger contest every year since around 2010. The public nominates restaurants each February, the ballots produce a top 10, and anonymous judges visit each finalist. The judges focus on the beef patty, not the toppings, and the winner is announced on May 1, the first day of May Beef Month.
That contest is the best map to the state's burgers. In recent years it has favored a few clear styles:
- Smash burgers: thin patties pressed hard on a hot flat-top for a crispy crust. Smash burgers won several years in a row before 2025. Our smash burger vs. regular burger guide explains the difference.
- Thick bar-and-grill burgers: big hand-formed patties, often made with fresh beef from a nearby meat locker.
- Loose meat sandwiches: seasoned, crumbled ground beef on a bun, not a patty at all. It's Iowa's own regional style.
Northeast Iowa
- Dixie's Biergarten, Decorah: the 2026 Iowa's Best Burger winner. Its smashburger stacks two 4-ounce patties of chuck and brisket with American cheese, fried onions, lettuce, pickles, tomato and smash sauce on a toasted brioche bun. Decorah is a scenic bluff-country town, which makes this an easy weekend trip.
Central Iowa and the Des Moines area
Central Iowa has more recent contest finalists and winners than any other part of the state, and most of them are within an hour of Des Moines.
- Halftime Bar & Grill, Pleasantville: the 2025 winner. It's a family-run sports bar southeast of Des Moines. It grills 8-ounce patties of fresh, never-frozen beef from a local meat locker. The judges singled out the Humpback Burger, which comes with ham, pepper jack, bacon, sautéed onions and a smoky house sauce.
- Flight Bar & Grille, Huxley: the 2023 contest winner, just south of Ames. In 2025, Mashed chose its Foundation burger as the best burger in Iowa. It's a double smash burger with a crispy crust.
- Smash & Grab Burger Co., Knoxville: a top 10 finalist in both 2025 and 2026. As the name says, it's a smash burger specialist.
Eastern Iowa: Cedar Rapids and Iowa City
- Salsa Guy Café, Cedar Rapids: another back-to-back finalist, making the top 10 in 2025 and 2026.
- Tornado's Pub & Grub, Cedar Rapids: a Foodie.com pick for the best burger joint in Iowa in a 2026 roundup of all 50 states.
- Wilder, Iowa City: a 2025 Iowa's Best Burger finalist. It's a good stop if you're in town for a University of Iowa game.
Loose meat country: Marshalltown
- Taylor's Maid-Rite, Marshalltown: the most famous name in Iowa loose meat. Cliff Taylor bought the Maid-Rite franchise for Marshalltown in 1928, and the family business has been serving loose meat sandwiches ever since. In 2025, food writer George Motz's Hamburger America diner in New York City made the Taylor's Maid-Rite its monthly regional special. Expect seasoned crumbled beef on a soft bun, and expect some of it to fall out as you eat.
Loose meat is a different experience from a patty burger. There's no crust or char. The appeal is soft, seasoned beef and a squishy bun, so order it plain the first time and add mustard, pickle or onion to taste.
How to plan an Iowa burger road trip
- Use the contest as your list. The Iowa Beef Industry Council posts its top 10 finalists each spring. Finalists are spread across the state, so pick a cluster.
- Pair Marshalltown with Central Iowa. Taylor's Maid-Rite, Flight Bar & Grille in Huxley and Halftime in Pleasantville can all fit in one day with Des Moines as a base.
- Check hours twice. Many small-town bars close between lunch and dinner or close one or two days a week.
- Order the house burger. At a contest winner, the burger the judges praised is the one to try first.
- Cross the river. If you're in western Iowa, our Omaha burger guide covers spots just over the Nebraska line.

Make an Iowa-style burger at home
To make a contest-style smash burger, start with 80/20 ground chuck. Our best ground beef for burgers guide explains why fat matters. Then follow our ultimate smash burger recipe on a very hot griddle. For a loose meat sandwich, brown ground beef in crumbles with a little onion and seasoning, drain it, and spoon it onto soft buns. Cook ground beef to 160°F for USDA-recommended doneness; our burger temperature guide has the details.
